Mechanical-biological treatment plant with Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) production

The mechanical–biological treatment plant with Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) production, located in the Tufo Colonoco area within the Municipality of Isernia, is authorised—together with the entire plant complex—pursuant to Article 29-quater, paragraph 10 of Legislative Decree 152/06, by Decree D.D. no. 14 of 13/07/2015, as updated by Decree D.D. no. 1697 of 04/05/2018, issued by the Molise Region.

The plant treats the main waste streams generated by standard waste collection systems (municipal waste, residual waste from separate collection and waste assimilated to municipal waste), as well as non-hazardous special waste.

The general operating scheme of the processing cycle can be summarised as follows:

  • Waste delivery phase;
  • Shredding and screening phase;
  • Ferrous removal and separation using a ballistic classifier;
  • NIR separation of the heavy fraction;
  • Refinement of the light fraction;
  • Final compaction phase.

The plant is designed for a daily input flow of 100 tonnes, corresponding to output streams classified as combustible waste (RDF), organic fraction, plastics, ferrous metals and residual material destined for landfill.

The facility is equipped with an optical sorter known as MISTRAL, which enables separate or simultaneous sorting of different materials, and with a Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy sorter combined with a metal detector.

This technology makes it possible to identify and separate the most common plastics (e.g. PET and PE) and to remove ferrous and non-ferrous elements from the waste stream. The system ensures the controlled ejection of detected objects through a high-precision synchronised mechanism which, within milliseconds, extracts plastics, metals, paper and cardboard.
